Why denim is the slowest thing to get right

Denim is the one category where a brand cannot hide behind a good photograph. The fabric has to be heavy enough to hold a shape but soft enough to wear on the second day, the dye has to survive washing, and the fit has to work on people built differently from the fit model. Getting all three at once takes longer than any other piece, which is why this category is still empty rather than filled with something ordered from a catalogue.

Colour retention is the part most people notice. Cheap black denim turns grey within a couple of months, and no amount of careful washing brings it back. That comes down to how the fabric was dyed in the first place, long before it reaches anyone.

How to buy denim online, whenever it lands

• Measure a pair you already own and wear, laid flat, waist edge to edge, then double it. That number is worth more than any size label.
• Do the same for the inside leg. Length is the measurement people get wrong most often.
• If both numbers sit within a couple of centimetres of the product page, the fit will almost certainly be right.
